Lurking in the shadows just beyond the bright lights of Times Square and Broadway lies a neighborhood once so rife with gangster crime, they called it Hell's Kitchen, where even the NYPD feared to tread. While today you needn't fear this diverse community of artists, writers, filmmakers and professionals, it still retains its working class character and some of its infamous landmarks, setting a backdrop for a breathtaking probe into its notorious past. You'll raise a glass at each of three classic saloons, including the former headquarters of the ruthless Westies gang, replete with accounts of brazen daylight rubouts and violent turf wars. But Hell's Kitchen's legacy is not a totally dark one as you'll also learn about the illustrious playwrights who plied their craft here to feed a once insatiable Broadway appetite. With refreshing libations and warm camaraderie, this is an unforgettable journey into the very soul of New York City.
