Known as the crossroads of the World, Times Square and the surrounding Broadway Theater district serve as the center of musical and theatrical performances in the world. New York City has always been on the cutting edge of music and theater. On this tour, learn how the famous Broadway shows migrated from Southern Manhattan to their current home on Times Square. This saunter through music history brings theater history alive as you relive the glory days of Broadway.

You’ll meet your guide at the Times Square Visitor Alliance Center across the street from the TKTS ticket book. You will embark on a 2-hour journey through American theater history where you will learn about the legendary figures who created Broadway, from George M. Cohan, Father Duffy, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. You’ll explore the majestic theater houses that have housed the most famous shows, including Winter Garden Theater, the New Amsterdam Theater, Paramount Theater, and the Schubert Theater.

You will also learn some of the other hidden history of Times Square and midtown. Learn how 42nd Street has evolved over the years from corrupt, crime-ridden alley, to the center of the new Theaters under the Walt Disney Company. You’ll also see some of the lesser known stories, including where Burt Williams broke the Color barrier, where Eugene O’Neil was born, and the theater that changed the face of Broadway because of the Titanic disaster.

Before you go see your Broadway show, come join us on this journey through American Theater and Music history. You can walk around Broadway today, but only we can take you to the Broadway you don’t see anymore, and learn the magic of how Broadway became the center of the world’s Musical and Theater performances. By the end of this tour, you will know more about Broadway than most self proclaimed Theater afficianados.

At the start of the tour Sam declared that "by the second pub, I'm largely irrelevant." As I look around at the seven people who started tonight as strangers and who are now laughing and chatting, I can see what he means.
